Bars

From seedy smoking lounges to sloane-invested grog holes. And here's a guide that will be gradually updated and added to...

Bar Med

This newly renovated bar is situated alongside the river in the Welsh Back, over the road from the old castle in the heart of Bristol. It is conveniently placed next to a huge complex of student accomodation, which guarantees the bar will be constituted mainly of students at night, and the day for that matter. It makes a good starting point for weekend antics at Odyssey or Club IQ. Drinks are averagely priced.

Bohemia

Right at the top end of Whiteladies Rd, next to the Downs is relatively new Bohemia. It has four floors and boasts 3 bars. The decor and punters are less than bohemian, with a cheap, value-for-money menu available throughout the day. The top floor is available for hire for parties etc., and it offers a laidback ambience for a quite Sunday pint.

The Square

Tucked away from the hussle and bussle of Park Street and Clifton Triangle is the Square Bar, situated alongside lawyer and estate agent offices and a lavish looking hotel. The bar is below the offices in a basement. It has the usual avant-garde, minamilist interior that is found in bars of its type and hosts a number of designer drinks. It makes a good mid-way point between the centre and the Whiteladies' strip.

Mud Dock

Placed slightly out of the way the bulk of central Bristol's bars, the Mud Dock offers rustic, yet sophisticated surroundings. There is a small menu on offer and employs the jugs not pints rule to its beer. Cocktails and shorts are available at the usual prices. You can find Jon and Jez from Eat the Beat Record shop here on Fridays, the bar is a good pre-Thekla Venue.

HogsHead

The themed pub boom of the last two years has brought about so many chained pubs that you cannot tell which pub is unique and which isn't. The Hoghead is no exception. It prides itself more on attracting lunching workers and Corn Street drinkers than the other bars featured, and feels earily similar to the Firkin pubs, give or take a few 1920s Oxo posters. It does offer the logical progression from Bar Excellence and then onto Edwards, or visa versa.

Colsten Avenue, Bristol.

Bar Ha Ha

About 5 buildings down from the Square Bar is where you'll find Bar Ha Ha, the next stop in anyone's pub crawl of North Bristol. It has a lush beer garden that is below street level for summer drinking, whilst its interior offers a sanctuary for cold winter nights. Expect to queue at the weekend and shell out about £2 for a pint, £1.50 for shorts.

Henry J Beans

Well you have got half way up the strip, why not stop in for a cocktail or jug of beer (they only do two pint pitchers as their license is restricted and hence cheaper), and savour the themed pub atmosphere. The bar is spacious and there is not much intrusion from loud music if you after a quiet drink, except at weekends.
